Where’s CBP?

October 19, 2017 | by David Connerty-Marin

CBP staff members have been crisscrossing the USA talking about the importance of strong, diverse charter school boards. Catch up on where we've been recently, and where we’re headed next.

Carrie was invited to attend the annual EDventure gathering in Boise, Idaho, hosted by America Succeeds. The conference focused on business involvement in education as jobs change and technology reshapes workforce needs.

Carrie and Kate met with a group of charter school leaders and board members in Los Angeles to learn about the challenges and opportunities boards face in the city, given the complicated public education landscape.  We also met with the leadership of the African American Board Leadership Initiative to explore a possible partnership.

After a successful pilot program through which we recruited, trained and matched talented community members to Denver metro area charter school boards, we were back in Denver co-hosting a discussion on diversity, equity, and inclusion in board and school practices sponsored by the Walton Family Foundation. Read Debbie’s blog post about our work in Denver.

CBP presented on effective board practices at the 6th Annual Nevada Charter School Conference sponsored by the Charter School Association of Nevada.

Lucy and Shereen attended policy discussions at the Congressional Black Caucus on topics that impact the Black community. We met some great charter school board candidates too!

Being part of the CBP network creates opportunities to connect formally for trainings and work sessions, and informally to network and catch up at our quarterly happy hours. Read Carrie’s remarks from our latest gathering.

CBP loves boards, and the CBP board is our favorite! This marked our fall 2017 CBP board meeting.

Debbie and Carrie stopped in Denver to attend two publication events for David Osborne's book, Reinventing America's Schools, which features CBP as a changemaker in the ecosystem surrounding the push for high quality and greater accountability for public schools.

Debbie and Lucy are presenting at the National Association of Charter School Authorizers conference in Phoenix on board accountability and DEI issues that affect boards, schools and communities.

Shereen presented Great Boards for Great Schools: Effective Charter School Governance at the New Jersey Charter School Conference.

Carrie is co-presenting with Rick Cruz, of the DC Public Charter School Board, at BoardSource’s Leadership Forum in Seattle on the importance of nonprofit boards in bringing us together in these divided times. Read about CBP’s partnership with BoardSource.

Partnering with the Rose Foundation and other local partners, CBP will be in Denver to share the findings of the recently released Bellwether Report: The Case for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Lucy and Kate will lead a board member affinity space after the presentation of the report. Read more about the report.
