Communications Coaching Sessions

May 17, 2017 | by Charter Board Partners

Board members, charter school communications professionals, heads of school and others: Do you know what you want to say? DC Public Charter School Board and Charter Board Partners are partnering to offer two free communications workshops on Thursday May 25 at 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

During these sessions you will learn how to effectively and thoughtfully get your message out to reporters and the public…and to attract families and potential teachers, appeal to funders, and differentiate your school. This will be an interactive coaching session with opportunities for role-playing, real-time feedback, and discussion. This session is for board members, communications professionals, school spokespeople, heads of school, and others looking to strengthen their communications skills (even if you don’t speak to the media) and learn how to develop effective messages.

David Connerty-Marin will lead the workshop. He has a dozen years of experience as a journalist and leveraged that writing and storytelling experience – and understanding of what journalists need – to refine messages and promote the work of mission-driven organizations, with a focus on education. He has experience in crisis communications at the state and national levels. He served as Director of Communications for the Speaker of the House in Maine, the Maine Department of Education, and Parcc Inc., the national education nonprofit that managed the rollout of the controversial multi-state standardized PARCC test.

Charter Board Partners and the DC Public Charter School Board are co-sponsoring these workshops with two times and locations. Limited to 20 people each session to allow for interaction.
Takeaways for participants

  1. Participants will be able to articulate a clear, focused message in media interviews and other settings.
  2. Participants will be able to direct interviews and questioning to allow repetition of their key messages.
  3. Participants will be able to speak in meaningful sound bites that deliver information and key messages.
