First-Ever DC Charters Conference Taps CBP Expertise

February 26, 2017 | by Carrie C. Irvin

DC’s mature and dynamic charter school sector got even better this month, when FOCUS hosted the first-ever DC Charter School Conference. Charter Board Partners was honored to lead the governance strand for this gathering of well over 400 charter school leaders, board members, administrators, supporters, funders, and advocates. We presented three sessions:

  • Sid Smith, senior consultant for CBP, led a session on the importance of board diversity and how to build an inclusive board. He was joined by Shayna Hammond, CEO of Teach to Lead, and Jean-Claude Brizard, board chair at Capital City Public Charter School.
  • Carrie Irvin, CBP’s CEO, presented a session on the importance of a strong partnership between the authorizer, the board, and the school leader, together with Naomi Rubin Deveaux, Deputy Director at the DC Public Charter School Board, and Amber Northern, senior vice president for research at the Thomas B. Fordham Institute.
  • CBP’s Debbie Lister and Shereen Williams led a session on assessing the health of a charter school board, which requires regularly asking the “big questions”--the right ones, of course.  Debbie and Shereen led a discussion with guest panelists Lydia Carlis, a member of the board of Ingenuity Prep, and Margaret Horn, of Center City Public Charter Schools’ board.

The energy in the room at each of these was contagious, and it was a privilege to share our experience and expertise with the experienced and courageous leaders in the room.  We’re grateful to our partners and co-presenters and to FOCUS for featuring governance so prominently.  We’re already looking forward to next year!
