CBP is Building Partnerships With Impact

March 20, 2018 | by David Connerty-Marin

We are working coast-to-coast to help public charter schools strengthen their boards, improve accountability by empowering boards to exercise oversight, and raise awareness of the importance of effective and diverse boards. Our work helps improve individual schools, and it also strengthens the charter school sector as a whole.

Here's where we've recently been building partnerships and improving charter school governance across the country.

Washington, D.C. In early February, Debbie, Lucy, and Carrie presented two separate sessions at the second annual DC Charter School Conference, organized by FOCUS DC.

Lucy and Debbie led a session in which participants worked on activities to find ways to engage with stakeholders beyond the boardroom and unlock the benefits of diversity, equity, and inclusion on their boards.

Carrie led a lively panel discussion about why and how charter school board members should be advocating—not only for their charter school, but  all public schools in the District. You can read more about the discussion and some of the specific recommendations made by panelists.

Kansas City, MO. Lucy and Shereen got to see the mission and work of Kansas City charter schools in action. Lucy visited Academie Lafayette and Guadalupe Centers, and Shereen visited Citizens of the World, Frontier Schools and the Kansas City Neighborhood Academy. We're building on our pilot program in partnership with SchoolSmartKC with training this month and next for our original cohort members and a new group of charter school candidates.

Tampa, FL. Through a grant from the Florida Department of Education, CBP is working with boards in Hillsborough County to strengthen governance through training and recruiting qualified candidates to be matched with boards. Please let us know if you know someone who would make a great charter school board member.

Miami. Given CBP's commitment to value issues around diversity, equity, and inclusion, being a continuously learning team, Lucy and Debbie spent a day learning more and sharing about racial equity. Their experience willl benefit CBP's team, as well as our work helping boards engage in these critical conversations.

Indianapolis. The Mind Trust invited CBP to work with school leaders and board chairs within their investment portfolio to build best practices on their boards in their pre-operative and early start up years.
